My printer doesn't have Letter paper size (it just exists in USA). It's not completely clear which preference controls, but I suspect it's the first one of these in about:config: print.printer_name.print_paper_data = 1 ... in my tests, 1 means Letter size and 9 means A4 size printer_printer_name.print_paper_data should be at 8 for A4 size paper (not the A4 Borderless). Firefox reverting from user-specified A4 to default Letter paper size is still a problem in Firefox 0.9.3 but I've narrowed it down to when it's most likely to happen: when a webpage specifies a "print this page" feature which calls javascript:window.print() or something similar.
